Nick Admussen serves as Associate Professor of Asian Studies at Cornell University, where he works as a faculty adviser to Perry Link.
His research specializes in Twentieth Century Chinese Prose Poetry, examining how the genre evolved since the term was translated into Chinese in 1918. Admussen's methodology combines genre study, literary history, analysis of the literary field, and close reading. He argues that Chinese prose poetry should be understood not as a static category defined by measurable qualities, but as the result of compositional and conceptual processes including condensation, recitation, and refusal.
His work identifies significant historical shifts in the genre, showing that Chinese prose poetry before 1949 differs substantially from works after 1949. Contemporary official prose poetry maintains strong generic identity with characteristics of socialist literature, while avant-garde poets working in prose forms often avoid the category despite formal affinities. His dissertation includes an anthology of translations featuring works by Ke Lan, Guo Feng, Liu Zaifu and Ouyang Jianghe, though copyright restrictions have led to redaction of these poems in the online version.
