Nicholas Watson is the Henry B. and Anne M. Cabot Professor of English Literature at Harvard University's Department of English. He specializes in Medieval English Literature, Theology, and Intellectual History, with a focus on global medieval contexts, vernacular culture, and women’s writing. Watson holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto (1987), and prior degrees from Cambridge and Oxford. His research explores mysticism, vernacular theology, and the interplay between literature and religious belief.
Selected works include Balaam's Ass: Vernacular Theology Before the English Reformation (2022) and Richard Rolle and the Invention of Authority (1991). He co-edited Anchoritic Spirituality: Ancrene Wisse and Julian of Norwich’s Revelation of Love. Watson is a Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America (2016).
His teaching emphasizes literature’s societal role, migration narratives, and cross-cultural dialogue. He advises on medieval women’s writing, mystical traditions, and the global Middle Ages. Watson’s office is Barker 221, with weekly office hours during term.
