Nicholas Smith is a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at Södertörn University's Department of Culture and Learning, Sweden, where he has been employed since 2000 and secured a permanent position in 2010. He maintains active international collaborations including a visiting scholar role at the Husserl-Archives in Leuven and teaching appointments at PUC Rio de Janeiro.
Smith earned his PhD (Filosofie doktor) from Stockholm University in 2010 with the dissertation Towards a Phenomenology of Repression: A Husserlian reply to the Freudian challenge, examining Husserl's genetic phenomenology through Freudian psychoanalysis, particularly repression dynamics.
His research critically interrogates Eurocentric frameworks through decolonial phenomenology, Afro-Caribbean thought, and indigenous philosophies. Smith specializes in the intersections of phenomenology, feminist theory, and psychoanalysis, with emphasis on colonial difference, transcendental prejudice, embodiment, and temporal structures of subjectivity. His work consistently bridges continental philosophy with postcolonial critique to challenge Western philosophical canons.
Smith's publication trajectory (2010-2016) reveals an evolution from psychoanalytic phenomenology toward decolonial frameworks, with recurring engagement in Husserl's temporal and genetic phenomenology. Key thematic clusters include pregnancy as philosophical disruption, colonial epistemologies, and unconscious structures in perception.
Smith has not received major scientific awards according to available records.
He has secured significant research funding including the project Decolonizing Phenomenologies (2016-2018) with Madina Tlostanova and contributions to Perceptions of the Other; Aesthetics, Ethics and Prejudice (2012-2015). Smith co-organized the International Symposium for Phenomenology (2013-2015) in Perugia and serves on the editorial board of Metodo. International Studies in Phenomenology and Philosophy, demonstrating sustained institutional leadership.
Smith collaborates extensively with artistic communities, curating exhibitions like New Spaces, New Times (Tokyo, 2013) and contributing to interdisciplinary projects examining phenomenology's relationship to materiality, perception, and political resistance in artistic practice.
