Dr. Nicholas Roberts is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Undergraduate Board of Examiners at Durham University's School of Modern Languages and Cultures. His research focuses on modern Latin American literature, particularly the works of Venezuelan poet Eugenio Montejo and Argentine author Julio Cortázar. He explores themes of heteronymic writing, literary engagement with music, and the intersection of poetry with political and cultural contexts. Roberts has published two monographs: Poetry and Loss: The Work of Eugenio Montejo (2009) and Cortázar and Music (2019), alongside numerous journal articles and book chapters.
His current collaborative project with Universidad de Los Andes examines the theoretical underpinnings of heteronymic writing in Latin American literature. Roberts welcomes PhD supervision across Latin American poetry and fiction. His work bridges literary criticism with cultural analysis, addressing topics like Bolívar’s mythological legacy in Venezuelan politics and the role of jazz in Cortázar’s narrative structures.
Recent publications include digital media projects and analyses of Montejo’s poetic voice. His interdisciplinary approach integrates musicology, political studies, and comparative literature to illuminate the complexities of Latin American literary traditions.
