Greg Dawes is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at North Carolina State University (NC State), affiliated with the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Latin American Literature from the University of Washington (1990) and has been at NC State since 1989. Dawes specializes in 20th and 21st century Latin American literature and culture, with a focus on poetry and literary theory. He has authored several books, including Aesthetics and Revolution: Nicaraguan Poetry, 1979-1990 and Verses Against the Darkness: Pablo Neruda’s Poetry and Politics, and edited volumes such as Homenaje a Jaime Concha.
He founded and serves as Editor-in-Chief of A Contracorriente, a peer-reviewed journal on Latin American studies, and its affiliated press, Editorial A Contracorriente, which publishes academic books with the University of North Carolina Press. His research explores the intersections of politics, aesthetics, and cultural history in Latin American literature, with a particular emphasis on Pablo Neruda, Nicaraguan poetry, and contemporary Argentine novels.
Current projects include a book on post-2000 Argentine narratives analyzing representations of armed conflict and democracy. Dawes has presented widely at academic conferences and institutions across the Americas, including the Universidad de Chile and the University of California, Davis. His work bridges scholarly publishing innovation with critical analysis of Latin America’s literary and political landscapes.
