Marcy Schwartz is a Professor in the Department of Latin American, Iberian, and Luso-Afro-Brazilian Literatures and Cultures at Rutgers University. Her research focuses on 20th-century Latin American literature, urban studies, and public culture, with recent work examining contemporary reading programs in Latin American cities and Julio Cortázar’s poetry. She actively engages in public humanities through community initiatives like People and Stories/Gente y Cuentos and serves on Rutgers’ Collaborative faculty advisory committee.
She holds a PhD from Johns Hopkins University and has held prestigious fellowships, including from the NEH and ACLS. Her publications include Páginas públicas: Leer en el paisaje callejero de América Latina (2025) and Public Pages: Reading along the Latin American Streetscape (2018). She has edited volumes on translation, urban fiction, and photography’s intersection with literature.
Her awards include the 2023 Clement A. Price Human Dignity Award and the 2018 Faculty Partner of the Year Award. She teaches undergraduate service-learning courses and has served on editorial boards for Latin American Literary Review and Textos Híbridos.
