Nicholas McGlynn is a Senior Lecturer in Geography at The University of Brighton, affiliated with the School of Applied Sciences. He is part of the Centre for Transforming Sexuality and Gender and the People, Nature and Places Research Excellence Group. His work focuses on LGBTQ geographies, particularly Bear subculture and body image among GBQ men. He holds a PhD in Environment (2015), MSc in Gender, Development and Globalisation (2009), and BA in Classical Studies and English Literature (2004).
Research interests include LGBTQ policy analysis, queer spatial practices, and fat studies. Notable awards include the 2019 Excellence in Facilitating & Empowering Learning award for his innovative teaching methods, which incorporate multimedia and participatory learning. He supervises postgraduate research in areas like queer migration, fat studies, and community-based research.
Current projects include a Leverhulme-funded study on Bear subculture origins (2025–2026) and a UKRI project examining LGBTQ migration and mental health (2020–2022). He serves as Secretary of the Royal Geographical Society’s Space, Sexualities, and Queer Research Group since 2017.
Key publications include Bodies and Boundaries of UK Bear Spaces (2024) and contributions to the Elgar Encyclopedia of Queer Studies (2025). His work bridges academic research with community engagement, such as queer history walking tours in Brighton.
