Professor Nicholas H. Williams is a Professor of Physical Organic Chemistry at the University of Sheffield, affiliated with the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences. He holds the position of Chemistry L3 Coordinator and has been a faculty member since 1996, progressing from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer (2003), Reader (2007), and ultimately Professor (2011). His education includes a BA (1988), MA, and PhD (1992) in Chemistry from the University of Cambridge.
His research focuses on physical organic chemistry, with three main strands: (1) biomimetic catalysis mimicking enzymatic efficiency, (2) supramolecular systems for controlled signaling and catalysis, and (3) surface-modifying calixarene derivatives for material interfaces. He explores molecular design, synthesis, and property analysis to understand reactivity and create functional materials.
Publications emphasize catalytic mechanisms, supramolecular assemblies, and applications in materials and biochemistry. Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate and postgraduate modules on stereochemistry, reaction mechanisms, and stereoelectronics. His work bridges organic synthesis, catalysis, and biomimetic systems, contributing to fields like environmental chemistry, materials science, and biophysical interfaces.
