Nicholas Carpino is an Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Stony Brook University. He earned his PhD in 1997 from the same institution and focuses on host-pathogen interactions and immune response regulation.
His research centers on the immunoregulatory enzymes Sts-1 and Sts-2, which act as critical checkpoints in antimicrobial immunity. Key projects include elucidating their biochemical and in vivo mechanisms, investigating their roles in innate and adaptive immunity, and developing small-molecule inhibitors to target these enzymes for novel therapeutic strategies.
Publications highlight his work on bacterial and fungal infection models (e.g., Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans), T-cell signaling pathways, and applications in immunotherapy and autoimmune disease suppression. His Carpino Lab explores interconnected regulatory networks controlling host immunity and drug development for immune checkpoint modulation.
