Dr. Niamh Lewis is an Assistant Professor/Lecturer in Equine Reproduction and Fertility at the University College Dublin's School of Veterinary Medicine. She holds a BVMS from the University of Edinburgh (2008), a European and American specialty certification in Equine Reproduction (2015), and a PhD from the University of Liverpool (2015). Her research focuses on metabolic influences on equine reproductive outcomes, including energy metabolism during in vitro maturation and the application of equine models for human 'One Health' research. She established Ireland's first commercial equine ICSI facility and is currently developing a new ICSI laboratory at UCD.

Research Interests: Dr. Lewis investigates how maternal metabolic health (e.g., obesity, diabetes) impacts offspring development in equines and explores translational applications to human health. Her work includes a DAFM-funded project on maternal obesity effects in Connemara Ponies.
Grants: Lead researcher on the DAFM grant (2024-2024) studying metabolic consequences in offspring of obese Connemara mares.
Teaching: Supervises MSc and DVMS theses in equine reproduction and fertility.
Labs/Teams: Leading the establishment of an ICSI laboratory at UCD to advance equine assisted reproduction research.
