Dr Niall Gilmartin is a Lecturer in Sociology at the School of Applied Social and Policy Sciences, Ulster University, specializing in gender, conflict, and peacebuilding. He teaches modules on Conflict, Peace & Security and Qualitative Research Methods.
- Education: PhD and undergraduate degree from Maynooth University; Post-Doctoral experience at University of Liverpool and Trinity College Dublin.
His research focuses on gendered experiences of conflict, peacebuilding, and forced displacement in Northern Ireland, with an emphasis on qualitative interviews with affected communities. Key projects include examining female combatants' post-conflict transitions and displacement during the Troubles, funded by the HEA North-South Shared Island Research Programme.
Recent publications include books on female combatants (Routledge, 2019), post-Good Friday Ireland (Manchester University Press, 2021), and Troubles-era displacement (Liverpool University Press, 2022). His journal work explores gendered post-conflict narratives in Capital & Class (2019) and transitional justice in International Journal of Transitional Justice (2021).
He collaborates with Dr Theresa O’Keefe, Dr Dyuti Chakravarty (UCC), and Dr Brendan Ciaran Browne. His work aligns with UN SDGs for peace, justice, and reduced inequalities.
