Niall Gandy is a Lecturer in GIS at the Sheffield Institute of Social Sciences, part of the College of Social Sciences and Arts at Sheffield Hallam University. He holds a PhD from the University of Leeds (2020) and has postdoctoral experience in coupled climate-ice sheet modeling. His expertise spans palaeo-glaciology, GIS applications in environmental science, and ice sheet dynamics.
Education: BSc and MSc from the University of Sheffield (Polar and Alpine Change), followed by a PhD at the University of Leeds focusing on the British-Irish Ice Sheet. His postdoctoral work involved advancing climate-ice sheet coupling methodologies.
Research focuses on modeling ice stream behavior, marine ice sheet instability, and the application of GIS in environmental management. Key interests include reconstructing past ice sheet dynamics and understanding their interactions with climate systems. Recent work emphasizes parameter tuning in coupled models and uncertainty quantification in paleoclimate reconstructions.
Teaching responsibilities include leading the MSc in Geographical Information Systems and contributing to undergraduate programs in Geography, Climate Sustainability, and Environmental Management. Core modules include 'Glaciology', 'Introduction to GIS', and 'Remote Sensing'.
Supervision: Co-supervisor of Violet Patterson's PhD at the University of Leeds. Active in interdisciplinary collaborations, including BRITICE-CHRONO ice sheet reconstruction projects and joint statistical-climate studies.
Labs/Teams: Central member of Sheffield Hallam's GIS research group and collaborator in international ice sheet modeling initiatives. Engages with the Leeds climate modeling community and statistical method developers.
