Niall Atkinson is an Associate Professor of Art History, Romance Languages and Literatures, and the College at the University of Chicago, serving as Chair of the Department of Art History. He holds a PhD in the History of Architecture and Urbanism from Cornell University (2009). His research focuses on Italian Renaissance art and architecture, with emphasis on urban spaces, soundscapes, and digital visualization technologies. He leads projects like Wandering in Rome (with Susanna Caviglia) and collaborates on Neubauer Collegium initiatives exploring sonic and spatial histories. His award-nominated book The Noisy Renaissance examines Florentine acoustic environments. He has held prestigious fellowships at Villa I Tatti and the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence.

Research interests include Renaissance urban disorientation, sensory experience of built environments, and multi-media strategies in urban transformation. He uses digital tools to map acoustic relationships and visualize spatial dynamics. His collaborative projects integrate interdisciplinary approaches, blending art history with digital humanities and sensory studies. Awards highlight his contributions to redefining Renaissance urban studies through innovative methodologies.
