Professor Nia Bryant is Chair of Cell Biology at the University of York's Department of Biology. Her research focuses on intracellular membrane trafficking mechanisms, particularly the role of SNARE proteins in regulated membrane fusion events. She investigates how insulin regulates GLUT4 trafficking in adipocytes and muscle cells, with applications to Type-2 Diabetes pathogenesis and therapeutic biomanufacturing. Bryant employs yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) as a model system, linking fundamental cell biology to human diseases like neutropenia and diabetes.
Her lab explores molecular mechanisms controlling SNARE complex assembly, including phosphorylation events and protein interactions (e.g., EHD2, syntaxin isoforms, Vps45). Recent projects include optimizing CHO cell lines for monoclonal antibody production and studying EFR3 and PI4KIIIα signaling pathways. Teaching emphasizes research-led learning, integrating experimental techniques and critical analysis of published literature.
Bryant has secured major grants including BBSRC-funded studies on glycan biosynthesis and EPSRC-supported biomanufacturing optimization. Her lab collaborates internationally, with projects focusing on GLUT4 vesicle biogenesis, insulin receptor signaling, and membrane fusion dynamics. She mentors students through independent projects aligned with ongoing PhD/postdoc research, providing hands-on experience in advanced cell biology techniques.
