Amira Klip is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Toronto and a Scientist at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). Her research focuses on the cellular and biochemical mechanisms of insulin action and resistance, particularly the regulation of glucose transporters (GLUT4) in muscle and fat cells. She has been instrumental in uncovering signaling pathways involving IRS proteins, PI 3-kinase, Akt/PKB, and Rac1 in glucose uptake dynamics.
Research Highlights
- Discovered distinct recruitment mechanisms of GLUT4 transporters via insulin and exercise
- Elucidated roles of Rac1, Rab8, and Rab13 in insulin signaling
- Investigated cellular crosstalk between immune cells and muscle cells in obesity-linked diabetes
Scientific Contributions
- Tier I Canada Research Chair on the Cell Biology of Insulin Action
- Editor-in-Chief, American Journal of Physiology-Endocrinology & Metabolism
- Supported by CIHR, Canadian Diabetes Association, and Banting and Best Diabetes Centre
Her lab employs rat/mouse muscle cell lines to study vesicle trafficking, actin cytoskeleton remodeling, and SNARE molecule interactions. Current projects include modeling insulin resistance through high glucose, saturated fats, and macrophage-conditioned media.
