Rev. Nelson Cowan, PhD is the Director of the School of the Arts and the Center for Worship and the Arts at Samford University. An ordained pastor in The United Methodist Church, he is also an Adjunct Professor who has taught at Emory University, Drew University, and Wesley Theological Seminary, focusing on worship, preaching, and church history.

Research Interests:
Nelson’s scholarly work centers on the intersection of worship, theology, and spiritual formation. His research explores contemporary Praise and Worship music, the liturgical theology of play, and how worship practices shape spiritual identity. While at Boston University, he conducted field research at Hillsong Church in New York City, analyzing the embedded liturgical theologies of everyday worshippers.
