Neil Mcmillan

Dr. Neil McMillan is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Adelaide's Adelaide Medical School, affiliated with the Basil Hetzel Institute for Translational Health Research and the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. He serves as Principal Medical Scientist for Vascular Surgery, managing the research program for the Vascular and Endovascular Service at the Central Adelaide Local Health Network. His current focus includes diabetes-related foot complications, telehealth innovations, and clinical research coordination. Previously, he specialized in animal cognition and behavior, studying interval timing and decision-making in animals.

Education: Honours degree from Wilfrid Laurier University, MSc and PhD from the University of Western Ontario (NSERC Scholar), and a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Alberta.

Research Interests: Current projects address diabetes foot disease management using technologies like mixed reality and AI. Past work explored animal behavior, including chickadee communication and decision-making in pigeons. He leads initiatives to improve Aboriginal healthcare access via VR/AR training and telehealth systems.

Grants & Funding: Secured over $3.3M in grants, including a $2.27M Medical Research Futures Fund for AR telemedicine, and a $713K project on exercise for diabetic foot wounds. Notable grants include studies on lipid profiling and bacteriophage therapy.

Awards: Teaching awards include the University of Alberta's Department of Psychology Honour Roll and the Interdisciplinary Science Students’ Association Award.

Labs/Teams: Leads the Vascular Surgery Research Group, collaborates with the Basil Hetzel Institute, and engages in multi-center studies with academic, clinical, and community partners.
