Neil Dansey is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Area Lead for Games in the School of Film, Media, and Creative Technologies at the University of Portsmouth. He is actively involved in research, teaching, and innovation in game design, pervasive games, and creative technologies.
His research interests focus on the creative interpretation of ambiguity in games and the application of constrained writing techniques to game development. His work explores how players reinterpret game rules to meet personal needs such as socializing, learning, and self-expression. He has led and contributed to numerous research and innovation projects, including Hackrobatics!, Sprint Project: SlowTV, and Interpretation as Play, often collaborating across disciplines and with industry partners.
His recent publications and creative outputs span from peer-reviewed articles in journals like Games and Culture and Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking to game artefacts and software. These works reflect a strong trend toward blending narrative, psychology, and technology in experimental and educational game design.

Neil Dansey has supervised multiple PhD students and is currently accepting new PhD candidates. He leads externally funded projects and industry collaborations, particularly with studios like Larian Studios. He is also active in academic and public engagement, organizing events such as Get In The Game 2024 and presenting at festivals like Guildhall Games Fest.
He has been involved in international outreach, including visiting lectures at Efrei Paris, demonstrating a strong commitment to global academic collaboration and innovation in game education.
