Neil Coleman is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Geology at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. He holds an M.S. in Geology from the University of South Florida (1979) and a B.S. in Natural Sciences from Pitt Johnstown (1977, magna cum laude). His research focuses on planetary hydrology, Mars geology, flood analysis, and historical disasters like the Johnstown Flood of 1889. He has authored over 40 peer-reviewed papers and a book detailing the 1889 flood's scientific and societal implications. His work on Martian megafloods and crater lake hydrology has advanced understanding of extraterrestrial fluvial processes. Coleman has also contributed to nuclear waste repository safety studies at Yucca Mountain, emphasizing volcanic risk assessment and groundwater interactions.
His research interests span dam safety, geophysics, climate change impacts, and nuclear facility siting. Recent studies include hydrological modeling of the Little Conemaugh River and AI-assisted robotic farming concepts for Mars missions. He frequently presents at conferences like the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference and collaborates with institutions like NASA and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Advising and grants include collaborative projects on Johnstown Flood hydrology and Mars mission planning. Coleman’s lab focuses on integrating field geophysics, remote sensing, and computational modeling to address environmental and planetary challenges.
