Victor Baker is a Regents’ Professor at the University of Arizona, affiliated with the Department of Geosciences and the Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences. He has been at the University of Arizona since 1981, previously serving as a Full Professor at the University of Texas at Austin from 1971–1981.
Education:
- B.S. in Geology, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1967)
- Ph.D. in Geology, University of Colorado (1971)
His research spans planetary paleohydrology, Earth geomorphology, and the intersection of science with policy and philosophy. He studies catastrophic megafloods on Earth and Mars, Martian surface features, and public perception of environmental science. His work integrates field investigations, computational modeling, and historical analysis.
Recent publications focus on ice-age megafloods, geomorphological evolution, and planetary science. These contributions highlight interdisciplinary approaches to understanding hydrological processes across terrestrial and extraterrestrial contexts.
Scientific Awards:
- Foreign Member, Polish Academy of Sciences
- David Linton Award, British Society for Geomorphology
- Distinguished Career Award, Geological Society of America
- Fulbright-Hays Senior Research Fellowship
- Fellowships in AGU, AAAS, and GSA
Professor Baker has advised numerous students and postdocs, led grants on paleoflood hydrology, and contributed to NASA missions including Viking, Magellan, and Mars Odyssey. His outreach includes documentaries on megafloods and public lectures on the Colorado River's hydrological history.
