Dr. Nazli Terzioglu is a design researcher and educator at the Royal College of Art, serving as a Tutor in the School of Design. Her academic work focuses on interdisciplinary design methods to enhance understanding and engagement with environmentally responsible behaviors, particularly through product repair practices and sustainable design education.
Dr. Terzioglu completed her practice-based PhD in Innovation Design Engineering at the Royal College of Art, funded by the Ministry of Economy of Turkiye. She also holds an MSc and Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design, along with a BA in Sociology from Middle East Technical University.
Her research centers on sustainable design practices with a particular focus on product repair as a pathway to circular economy. She developed the Repair Motivation and Barriers (RMB) model, which depicts the dynamic relationship between users, products, and repair activity. During her PhD, she designed 100 visible repairs to explore ways to encourage people to repair products rather than discard them. Her research spans sustainable packaging systems, user acceptance of eco-friendly alternatives, and educational frameworks for circular design.
Dr. Terzioglu currently teaches in the AcrossRCA, Grand Challenge, and MDes Design Futures programs at the Royal College of Art. Prior to her position at RCA, she was a research fellow at Brunel University London working on the PISCES project focused on plastic packaging waste in Indonesia, and a post-doctoral researcher at Linköping University in Sweden. Her work bridges design theory and practical applications for environmental sustainability, examining how design can influence user behaviors toward more responsible consumption patterns.
