Nazimul Islam is a postdoctoral Research Fellow at the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Birmingham, working on the NERC-funded project 'The Big Thaw' under Prof. David Hannah. He previously earned his PhD in Environmental Sciences from the University of Lausanne (2020-2024) with thesis work on hydrological reconstructions in Alpine and Himalayan basins, and holds two MSc degrees: one in River Basin Dynamics from University of Leeds (2017-2018) and another in Geography from Jamia Millia Islamia (2018-2020).
His research focuses on mountain hydrology, using tree rings and stable isotopes to analyze glacier retreat and climate change impacts on freshwater resources. He employs low-cost sensor technology and field expeditions across the Austrian Alps and Indian Himalayas for water source partitioning studies.
Scientific awards include:
- Agnese Haury Fellowship (2022)
- Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship (2020)
- Doctoral Mobility Fellowship at University of Cambridge (2022)
- International Excellence Scholarship at University of Leeds (2017)
- Aliah University Merit Scholarship (2016)
- Climate Research Grant (2018)
- Swiss Polar Institute Funding

He actively promotes citizen science through indigenous community engagement in glacier preservation policies and has served as Early Career Scientist Representative for the European Geosciences Union Climate Division (2021-2024). His work contributes to UN SDG4 (Quality Education) and SDG6 (Clean Water) through transdisciplinary research and science communication.
