Dr. Nawal Musleh-Motut is an Assistant Professor of Media and Communication at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV), affiliated with the School of Culture, Media, and Society within the College of Arts. Her work centers on decolonial pedagogy, critical race theory, and intersectional social justice. She designs courses such as 'Decolonizing Media,' 'Storytelling, Photography, and Resistance,' and 'Gender and Media,' emphasizing anti-racist and socially just frameworks.
Her postdoctoral research at Simon Fraser University (SFU) focused on decolonizing educational systems and countering institutional inequities through initiatives like the Decolonial Teaching and Learning Seminar Series and the Decolonizing and Indigenizing STEM (DISTEM) Website. These projects aimed to empower STEM faculty in integrating decolonial practices into teaching and curricula.
Nawal’s research is deeply informed by her identity as a Palestinian settler on unceded Indigenous lands. She critiques settler colonialism’s dual impacts and advocates for solidarity between Indigenous, Palestinian, and Black communities. Her teaching philosophy prioritizes critical media literacy, empathy, and student agency in fostering societal change.
Through collaborations with the DISTEM Team, she co-created a living archive of decolonial resources for STEM educators, emphasizing relationality to Indigenous knowledge systems. Despite challenges in securing sustained institutional support, her work underscores the urgency of decentering Western epistemologies in academia.
