Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Researchمعرفی
Dr. Nathaniel Anderson is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Behjati Group, Wellcome Sanger Institute, and holds a Charles and Katherine Darwin Junior Research Fellowship at Darwin College, University of Cambridge. His work bridges human development and disease with a focus on decoding childhood cancer mechanisms through genomic approaches.
His academic credentials include dual PhDs: one in Genetics and Genome Biology from SickKids Research Institute (University of Toronto) and another in Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology from the University of Toronto, complemented by an HBSc in Biological Sciences from the University of Toronto Scarborough.
Anderson's research integrates cancer genomics with immunology to dissect pediatric tumor ecosystems. He pioneers single-cell RNA-seq methodologies to map tumor-immune interactions in sarcomas and childhood cancers, with emphasis on identifying therapeutic vulnerabilities in immunotherapy-resistant microenvironments. His work reveals how genomic instability drives oncogenesis in developing tissues.
His publication record demonstrates expertise in sarcoma genomics, exemplified by his 2018 Science paper on rearrangement bursts generating driver gene fusions. This research established structural variant clustering as a fundamental mechanism in bone and soft tissue tumor evolution.
Major recognitions include:
- Charles and Katherine Darwin Junior Research Fellowship
- Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship
Anderson's grant portfolio centers on his fellowships supporting genomic investigations of pediatric malignancies. He actively collaborates across institutional boundaries to translate basic findings into clinical applications for childhood cancer patients.
As a core member of the Behjati Group and Cellular Genomics Programme at the Sanger Institute, he contributes to international consortia mapping tissue ecosystems. His laboratory work focuses on single-cell resolution profiling of tumor heterogeneity and immune evasion mechanisms in sarcomas.
