Dr. Nathan Stark serves as Professor and Director of Bands at Montana State University's School of Music within the College of Arts and Architecture. He directs the 190-member Spirit of the West Marching Band and conducts the Wind Symphony while maintaining an active schedule as a clinician, conductor, and adjudicator throughout the Northwest region.
His educational background includes:
- B.M. in Music Education from Boise State University (2000)
- M.M. in Performance from Arizona State University (2003)
- D.M.A. from Arizona State University (2009)
Dr. Stark's research explores new music for wind band, Montana wind band repertoire, marching band field drill design, student leadership, and instrumental music methodology. His scholarly work emphasizes innovative teaching techniques and expansion of wind ensemble literature, contributing significantly to music education pedagogy through both creative output and pedagogical frameworks.
His artistic contributions demonstrate a focus on contemporary wind band repertoire development and performance excellence, with commissioned works and festival leadership reflecting dedication to advancing the field through new compositions and educational initiatives.
Dr. Stark received the Distinguished Faculty Award from the College of Arts and Architecture in 2017.

He has secured research funding including Phase 1 of the Montana Wind Band Repertoire Project from the MSU Provost Office (MONPRO003). His service includes chairing NACWPI since December 2016, where he develops outreach programs supporting instrumental music educators across the nation.
As Director of Bands, Dr. Stark cultivates performance excellence through the Spirit of the West Marching Band and Wind Symphony ensembles, implementing innovative field drill designs while fostering student leadership development in large-scale musical productions.
