Nathan Nickel is a Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba. He holds leadership roles as Director of the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy, Co-director of The Need to Know Team, and Research Scientist at the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM). His research focuses on population health using administrative data to address health inequities related to social determinants, maternal-child health, substance use, and justice system impacts.
Dr. Nickel earned a PhD in Maternal and Child Health Policy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2011) and an MPH from UCLA (2007). His work emphasizes partnerships with Indigenous organizations (First Nations, Métis, Inuit) to co-create equitable policies. Key research themes include breastfeeding advocacy, causal inference methodologies, and structural determinants affecting marginalized populations.
His awards include the Terry G Falconer Rh Award (2018) and CIHR New Investigator Prize (2016). He teaches epidemiology and quantitative methods, mentoring students who frequently win national awards. Current roles include Associate Editor of the International Breastfeeding Journal and board memberships in community health organizations.
Notable projects include evaluating the Manitoba Healthy Baby Prenatal Benefit’s impact on Indigenous families and analyzing pandemic responses using linked administrative data. His research addresses policy gaps in child welfare, methamphetamine use, and maternal incarceration outcomes.
