Nathan L. Bangs is a Research Professor at the Institute for Geophysics, Jackson School of Geosciences, The University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on structural development and tectonic processes at convergent margins, utilizing advanced MCS seismic methods for 3-D imaging of subduction zones. He holds a Ph.D. in Marine Geophysics from Columbia University and B.A. in Geology and Physics from Williams College.
Current projects include the U.S.-Japan collaborative study of the Nankai Trough subduction zone and the NZ3D seismic experiment investigating slow-slip events at the Hikurangi margin. He has advised graduate students like Andrew Gase (expected 2023) and Kelly Olsen (2021). His work integrates seismic reflection data processing, rock physics, and numerical modeling to understand fluid migration, fault behavior, and earthquake mechanics.
Key research locations include the Barbados, Chilean, and Aleutian subduction zones. His affiliations include membership in the American Geophysical Union and Geological Society of America. Recent publications (2023-2025) emphasize structural analysis of subduction zones, fluid dynamics, and seismic imaging techniques.
