Dr. Nathan Gilbert is an Associate Professor in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at Durham University, with affiliations to the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies. He previously held positions at the University of Toronto (PhD 2015, lecturer 2016) and was a DAAD scholar at the University of Bonn. His research focuses on Cicero’s philosophical interactions with Roman contemporaries, challenging traditional views that reduce his works to Hellenistic translations. Key interests include Epicureanism, Herculaneum papyri (collaborating on Metrodorus fragments), and integrating Buddhist philosophy with Greco-Roman traditions.
Education highlights include a BA from Carleton College (USA) and PhD from the University of Toronto. Current research explores Cicero’s De Officiis, Atticus’s Epicureanism, and intellectual culture in the Late Republic. He supervises MA/PhD students in areas like Hellenistic philosophy and comparative philosophy.
Publications span Cicero’s philosophical works, Epicurean studies, and Roman intellectual history. Recent work includes edited volumes on Cicero’s philosophy and articles on Lucius Saufeius and Ciceronian rhetoric. He actively promotes Classics outreach through lectures on topics like Epicurus’s religious views.
Future initiatives include proposing Pāli language modules at Durham to bridge Greco-Roman and Indian philosophical studies. His interdisciplinary approach reflects a commitment to liberal arts and cross-cultural dialogue.
