Dr. Nathan Balke is the 2007 Dedman Family Distinguished Professor of Economics at Southern Methodist University (SMU), where he also serves as the Elisabeth Martin Armstrong Dean ad interim of Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences. He previously chaired the Economics Department (2000-2006, 2010-2013) and served as Interim Dean of Dedman College (2024-2025). He is a Research Associate at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas (1994-2023).
Dr. Balke holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Northwestern University. His research focuses on macroeconomics, applied time series analysis, and the linkages between financial markets, credit frictions, and economic activity. Key areas include oil price dynamics, energy market impacts, and the role of uncertainty in economic policy.
His notable contributions include studies on shale revolution effects, fiscal policy influences on inflation, and the quantitative analysis of credit frictions. He has received the Dedman Family Distinguished Professor award and contributed to policy research through the Federal Reserve Bank. His teaching includes graduate and undergraduate macroeconomics courses.
