Dr. Nathalie Segeral is a Lecturer in French Studies at the University of Sydney's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. She joined the university in February 2020 after previous academic appointments as an associate professor at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, Virginia Tech, and the École Normale Supérieure in Paris. Born in France, she holds a Ph.D. in French and Francophone Studies from UCLA (2012), an M.A. in Comparative Literature and Translation Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (2007), and additional M.A. and B.A. degrees from French institutions.
Her research integrates feminist theory, Holocaust/genocide studies, trauma theory, and cultural memory, with a focus on gender and (non-)motherhood in contemporary French and Francophone contexts (particularly Tahiti, New Caledonia, and Rwanda). Additional interests include translation theory/practice and narratives of psychiatric institutionalization.
Segeral's publications consistently explore trauma, gender, and memory across literary and cultural contexts, with recent work examining pandemic impacts on academic mothers and Francophone Oceanian voices. Her scholarly output demonstrates sustained engagement with Holocaust memory, postcolonial feminism, and translation politics.
Teaching & Supervision: She coordinates FRNC 3653 (French-English Translation), FRNC 2603 (Introductory French), and FRNC 3002. She supervises Honours and postgraduate research in contemporary French/Francophone studies, trauma, gender, and translation.
