Dr. Sophie Maddison is a Teaching Associate in French and Francophone Studies at the University of Sheffield's School of Languages, Arts and Societies. Her research focuses on Franco-Italian cultural connections spanning the 19th-21st centuries through ecocritical and urban-oriented frameworks, with additional interests at the intersection of environmental, health, and medical humanities.
She holds an MPhil and PhD from the University of Glasgow, an MLitt from Glasgow, and a BA from the University of Exeter.
Her scholarly work examines urban narratives related to Naples and Paris, cultural responses to WWII, and postwar environments. Current research investigates occupation experiences during WWII and their environmental connections to postwar urban life through ecocritical analysis integrated with memory and trauma studies.
Teaching activities include convening 'Understanding Gender and Society in France and the Francophone World' and instructing undergraduate modules on modern France, textual intersections, literature/environment, and visual studies, plus contributions to postgraduate translation and transnational cultural movements courses.
