Nate Morehouse is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cincinnati, where he also serves as Director of the Institute for Research in Sensing (IRiS) since 2020. His academic journey includes previous positions as Assistant Professor at both the University of Cincinnati (2017-2019) and University of Pittsburgh (2011-2016), following a Marie Curie Fellowship in France.
- Ph.D. in Biology, Arizona State University (2002-2009)
- B.S. in Biological Sciences, Cornell University (1996-2000)
Dr. Morehouse's research focuses on the visual ecology and evolutionary biology of arthropods, particularly examining how visual systems influence social interactions, mate selection, and ecological relationships. His work spans jumping spiders in the genus Habronattus and butterflies in the family Pieridae, investigating color vision, sexual selection, and the co-evolution of visual signals and perception. His lab employs diverse methodologies including behavioral ecology, vision research, molecular evolution, and comparative phylogenetics to address fundamental questions about sensory biology and evolution. His research has revealed novel mechanisms of color vision in jumping spiders and intricate sexual conflicts in butterfly reproductive systems.
Analysis of his recent publications shows a consistent focus on visual ecology and evolutionary mechanisms across arthropods. His work demonstrates strong interdisciplinary connections between sensory biology, evolutionary genetics, and behavioral ecology, with particular attention to how visual systems shape ecological and evolutionary processes. The research spans from molecular mechanisms to organismal behavior, highlighting the integrative nature of his scientific approach.
Dr. Morehouse leads an active research group comprising postdocs, PhD students, MS students, and undergraduate researchers. His lab has secured significant funding including NSF support for research on jumping spider displays and color vision evolution. His work has been featured in prominent media outlets including National Geographic, Science, and The Atlantic, reflecting the broad impact of his research.
The Morehouse Lab is embedded within the University of Cincinnati's faculty concentration in Sensory Biology, Behavior, and Evolution, collaborating with researchers across disciplines including engineering and the arts. His lab maintains strong connections with international researchers and institutions, fostering a dynamic research environment focused on understanding the evolution of sensory systems and their ecological consequences.
