Natasha Tokowicz is a Full Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh, affiliated with the Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences. Her research focuses on adult second language (L2) vocabulary learning, bilingualism, and the psycholinguistic mechanisms underlying lexical processing. She directs the Psycholinguistic Underpinnings of Multilingualism (PLUM) Lab and collaborates with the Learning Research and Development Center (LRDC).
Education: PhD from Penn State University.
Research Interests: Tokowicz examines translation ambiguity (e.g., words with multiple translations between languages), the role of individual differences (e.g., musical ability, working memory) in L2 learning, and morphosyntactic processing in non-native speakers. Her work combines behavioral experiments, ERP studies, and training interventions to explore how learners acquire and process linguistic information.
Recent Trends in Publications: Recent work emphasizes neurolinguistic aspects of L2 lexico-semantic systems, the impact of mentorship in academia, and cross-language influences on grammar learning. Studies often involve collaborations with undergraduate and graduate students, as seen in projects led by Diya Goyal, Victoria Tkacikova, and Andrea Tovar.
Awards: Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science (202X).
Advising & Grants: Currently not accepting new graduate students for 2024-2025. Her research has been supported by grants exploring bilingual lexical access and the role of music in L2 acquisition. She mentors students through internships like the LRDC Summer Undergraduate Research Program.
Labs & Teams: PLUM Lab investigates multilingualism and L2 learning, while collaborations with LRDC expand into educational neuroscience and language development.
