Dr. Gary Libben is a Professor in Applied Linguistics at Brock University, specializing in psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics. He holds a PhD from McGill University (1986) and has held roles including Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, editor of The Mental Lexicon, and former President of the Canadian Linguistics Association. His research focuses on lexical representation, particularly how words are processed in the mind and brain across languages and populations, employing psycholinguistic methods.
Key research interests include compound word processing, semantic transparency, bilingualism, and aphasia. He has authored/co-authored influential books such as Bilingualism: A framework for understanding the mental lexicon and Polylogues on the mental lexicon. His work spans experimental psychology, neurolinguistics, and cross-linguistic studies, contributing to understanding lexical dynamics in multilingual contexts.
Dr. Libben has taught courses in psycholinguistics and research methods at Brock University and the University of Vienna. His awards include the National Achievement Award from the Canadian Linguistics Association. He actively contributes to academic governance and interdisciplinary initiatives like the Living Lab Language project.
