Natasha Miles serves as a Research Professor in the Department of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science within the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University.
Her research centers on earth-atmosphere interactions with 20+ years of expertise in greenhouse gas dynamics, particularly carbon dioxide and methane. She investigates temporal and spatial distributions of these gases to identify sources and sinks through field deployments, data analysis, and modeling. Her work emphasizes atmospheric boundary layer conditions for model validation and improvement in both rural and urban environments.
Dr. Miles pioneered significant projects including the Mid-Continent Intensive (MCI) campaign (2007-2009) – the first regional tower network for carbon dioxide emission quantification in the U.S. corn belt – and the ongoing Indianapolis Flux (INFLUX) project (2010-present), which established NIST's inaugural urban greenhouse gas testbed. She extended these methodologies to methane studies in the Marcellus Shale (2015-2017) and Permian Basin (2020-present) oil/gas regions.
She directs the Earth-Atmosphere Interactions Lab which supports the Climate Science REU program, conducting field site operations, instrument calibration, and student mentorship while advancing atmospheric measurement techniques for emission verification.
