معرفی
Prof. Sander Houweling is a Full Professor in Earth Sciences at the Faculty of Science, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He collaborates with SRON Netherlands Institute for Space Research as a Partner since 2017. His research focuses on greenhouse gases, atmospheric processes, and remote sensing techniques for climate monitoring. Houweling develops methods to quantify emissions of CO2, CH4, and CO using satellite data and models, contributing to global climate science.
Research interests include improving atmospheric measurement availability via remote sensing, studying methane and carbon dioxide dynamics, and leveraging carbon monoxide as an emissions indicator. His work addresses climate change mitigation and aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to climate action and environmental protection.
Publications emphasize satellite-derived insights into emissions trends, such as methane's seasonal patterns in U.S. oil/gas sectors and large-scale wetland methane sources in South Sudan. He has contributed to datasets like the Global Carbon Project Methane Budget 2019 and the AeroCarb output archive.
Teaching includes courses on Climate Systems, Remote Sensing, and Biogeochemical Cycles. Media contributions highlight his expertise on atmospheric CO2 trends and methane emission underestimation in the oil/gas industry.
