Natalie Ooi is a Teaching Professor and Associate Chair of the Professional Master's Program in the Environmental Studies Department at the University of Colorado Boulder. She leads the Sustainability in the Outdoor Industry Specialization within the Masters of the Environment (MENV) program and is a faculty member in the online Master of Science in the Outdoor Recreation Economy (ORE), where she directs the Building Resilient Communities through the Outdoor Recreation Economy certificate. Her role emphasizes professional education for community and industry stakeholders.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Business and Economics
- Double Bachelor's Degree in Sport and Outdoor Recreation/Business and Commerce (Honors) in Tourism Management from Monash University, Australia
Research Interests:
Dr. Ooi focuses on sustainable tourism and recreation systems, particularly the resilience of tourism destinations and stakeholder relationships in mountain resort communities. Her work addresses barriers to outdoor recreation access for diverse populations, climate change impacts on the ski industry, and strategies for enhancing community economic vitality through outdoor economies.
Advising & Prior Experience:
Currently advises professional master's students exclusively in the MENV program. Previously served as Director of Tourism Enterprise Programs and Program Director for the Ski Area Management program at Colorado State University. Prior to academia, she worked in outdoor education, ski operations, and hostel management.
