Natalia Toro is an American particle physicist based at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Ontario, where she joined as a junior faculty member in the Particle Physics program in 2010.
Her educational background includes:
- Began college-level classes in sixth grade and skipped fifth, seventh and eighth grades
- Member of United States Physics Olympiad Team in 1998
- PhD from Harvard University in 2007 under Nima Arkani-Hamed; thesis titled "Fundamental Physics at the Threshold of Discovery"
- Postdoctoral studies at Stanford University (2007-2010)
- Research associate position at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory
Toro's research focuses on fundamental questions in particle physics with particular emphasis on dark matter and high-energy physics. She frequently collaborates with her husband Philip Schuster on developing research frameworks including the Heavy Photon Search, the Beam Dump Experiment, and serving as co-leads of A Prime Experiment at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Virginia. Their work has pioneered new approaches for searches at the Large Hadron Collider and experimental searches for dark matter.
Her significant scientific contributions have been recognized with prestigious awards:
- Intel Science Talent Search (1999) - youngest winner in the history of the prize at age 14
- New Horizons in Physics Prize (2015)
- Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award (2021)
Toro began her academic journey exceptionally early, winning the Intel Science Talent Search while a senior at Fairview High School in Boulder, Colorado for her research on neutrino oscillations and their impact on high-energy physics. She has established herself as a leading researcher in theoretical particle physics at the Perimeter Institute.
