Natalia Ortiz is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Director of the Office of School and Community Partnerships at the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development. She also serves as a board member of the Education for Liberation Network and a core member of the New York Collective of Radical Educators (NYCoRE). Her work focuses on anti-racist and social justice education, integrating critical performative pedagogy and Theater of the Oppressed as tools for teacher reflection and action.
Ortiz holds a BA in Latin American Studies from Wesleyan University, an MA in Education from Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a PhD in Urban Education from The CUNY Graduate Center. Prior roles include founding a social studies program at a Brooklyn transfer high school, coaching writing pedagogy at LaGuardia Community College, and serving as Director of Programs at the Center for Racial Justice in Education.
Her research emphasizes teacher inquiry groups, racial equity practices, and the intersection of education and activism. Publications highlight her contributions to liberatory pedagogy, including work featured in Radical Teacher and a chapter in Activists, Advocates, and Agitators. She has presented at AERA conferences and institutions like HGSE, advocating for transformative educational practices.
Ortiz’s professional narrative includes grassroots organizing, equity consulting, and leadership in national coalitions dedicated to educational liberation. Her advocacy extends beyond academia through community partnerships and mentorship initiatives.
