Aaliyah El-Amin is a Lecturer on Education and Faculty Co-Chair of the Identity, Power, and Justice in Education Concentration at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE). She holds an Ed.D. from HGSE (2015), specializing in Education Policy, Leadership, and Instructional Practice, along with prior degrees from Davidson College (B.A. Sociology), Georgia State University (M.A. Elementary Education), and the University of Georgia (Principal Licensure). Her career includes roles as an elementary teacher, school dean, and executive director of Teach For America in Charlotte, NC.
Her research focuses on liberatory education models, social justice schooling, and critical pedagogy. She leads an ethnographic study of emancipatory schools in the U.S. and collaborates on a longitudinal study of New England schools nurturing critical consciousness in students. Key areas include disrupting systemic oppression in education, youth participatory action research, and equity-centered curriculum design.
El-Amin's work emphasizes preparing educators to foster students' critical consciousness, linking academic rigor with social justice advocacy. She has received the HGSE Dissertation Fellowship (2015) and Morningstar Family Teaching Award, recognizing her innovative teaching and student mentorship.
Her contributions span publications on critical consciousness development, antiracist education, and equity strategies. She advocates for justice-oriented pedagogy as integral to youth development and societal transformation, blending theory with actionable classroom practices.
