Natalia Mejía Murillo is an Assistant Professor of Painting + Printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University Doha, Qatar. She holds an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University (2023), an MA in History and Theory of Arts from the National University of Colombia (2018), and a BFA from the same institution (2011). Her work bridges visual art and interdisciplinary research, focusing on cartography, archaeology, and astronomy to explore territory, time, and the interplay between reality and representation.
Research interests include mapping processes, the distortion of cartographic depictions, and pre-colonial territorial histories. She has received residencies worldwide, including Fire Station (Doha, 2024-2025), MASS MoCA (2023), and Fundació Miró Mallorca (2021). Notable exhibitions include solo shows at The Print Center (Philadelphia, 2024) and Revolver Galería (New York, 2024), alongside group exhibitions at the A+D Architecture Museum (Los Angeles, 2024) and Kunstmuseum Reutlingen (Germany, 2021).
Awards include the Folger Shakespeare Library Fellowship (2024) and FONCA (2017). Teaching spans institutions like the National University of Colombia and Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. Her practice integrates sculpture, printmaking, and installation to interrogate power dynamics in spatial narratives and historical representation.
