Natalia L. Komarova is a Professor and Dean's Scholar in the Department of Mathematics at the University of California San Diego (UCSD), where she has been since 2024. Previously, she held positions at the University of California Irvine (UCI), including Chancellor’s Professor (2017-2023) and Professor (2008-2023). Her research focuses on mathematical biology, cancer dynamics, evolutionary processes, and complex social phenomena. She earned a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Arizona (1998) and an M.S. in Theoretical Physics from Moscow State University (1993).
Dr. Komarova's work bridges applied mathematics and life sciences, addressing questions in cancer evolution, drug resistance, stem cell dynamics, and social systems modeling. She has authored numerous influential books, including Cancer Treatment in Silico and Dynamics of Cancer: Mathematical Foundations of Oncology.
- Education: Ph.D., Applied Mathematics, University of Arizona (1998); M.S., Theoretical Physics, Moscow State University (1993)
- Awards: AAAS Fellow (2024), UCI Chancellor’s Professor (2017-2023), Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship (2005-07)
- Research Groups: Active in cancer modeling, evolutionary dynamics, and interdisciplinary collaborations.
Her publications span disciplines from oncology to virology, emphasizing mathematical frameworks to understand biological systems. She has contributed to understanding mechanisms of drug resistance, tumor heterogeneity, and viral evolution.
