Nashaat Gerges, PhD, BPharm is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Biopharmaceutical Sciences at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). He holds a secondary appointment as an Associate Professor in the Department of Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy at MCW. Previously, he served as Associate Director of the Neuroscience Research Center (2010–present). His research focuses on cellular/molecular mechanisms of learning and memory, synaptic plasticity, and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s. He has secured over 10 grants (9 as PI) from NIH, Alzheimer’s Association, and others. His work has been published in Nature Communications, Nature Neuroscience, and Journal of Neuroscience, among others.
Education: PhD in Pharmacology (University of Houston, 2002), BPharm (University of Assiut, 1995), with postdoctoral training at University of Michigan and University of Houston.
Research employs electrophysiology, biochemistry, and microscopy to study synaptic proteins in hippocampal slices. Key interests include neurogranin’s role in calmodulin dynamics, PTEN’s synaptic function in Alzheimer’s models, and polyglutamine aggregation resistance in Dictyostelium.
Awards include Alzheimer’s Association Investigator of the Year (2012) and Rho Chi Honor Society membership. He has trained over 10 years in teaching medical/graduate students, emphasizing self-directed learning and innovative pedagogy.
Labs/Teams: Leads a lab focused on synaptic plasticity mechanisms using advanced imaging and electrophysiological techniques. Collaborates with multidisciplinary teams on neurodegenerative disease research.
