Dr Narelle Story is a Lecturer in the Discipline of Nursing and Midwifery at The University of Sydney. She holds clinical expertise in colorectal and general surgical nursing, with a focus on metabolic (bariatric) surgery. Her research explores patient decision-making, particularly regarding surgical interventions for obesity, and emphasizes nurse-led education and long-term patient care.
Dr Story completed her PhD (2011–2016) at The University of Sydney, investigating eating behaviors pre- and post-metabolic surgery. She has clinical experience in Australia, the USA, and Timor Leste, including roles as Bariatric Program Coordinator at George Washington University Hospital and Clinical Nurse Manager at the Sydney Institute for Obesity Surgery.
- Research interests include patient preferences for metabolic procedures, obesity surgery education, and healthcare provider biases in spinal cord injury rehabilitation.
- Teaching includes units in the Master of Nursing program on the Australian healthcare system and chronic illness management.
Current projects include the OSCIR study (collaborating with Ryde Rehabilitation Centre), examining weight bias in spinal cord injury care, funded by ARNA and Sydney Musculoskeletal Health Alliance grants.
