Professor Glen Macartney Davis OAM is a distinguished Professor of Clinical Exercise Sciences within the Discipline of Exercise and Sport Science at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Sydney. A naturalized Australian citizen since 1992, Professor Davis has established himself as a leading researcher in exercise therapy for special populations, with particular expertise in spinal cord injury rehabilitation and functional electrical stimulation technologies.
Professor Davis received his academic credentials from Canadian institutions, including a PhD from the University of Toronto (1986), an MA from Western University, and a BPHE (Honors) from the University of Ottawa. His educational background provided the foundation for his extensive career in clinical exercise sciences.
Professor Davis maintains strong research interests in electrical stimulation-induced walking and exercise for spinally-injured and stroke patients, exercise therapy for special populations including those with spinal cord injury, stroke, cerebral palsy, and traumatic head injury, the integration of exercise therapies with biomedical technologies for rehabilitation, exercise responses in breast cancer survivors, cardiovascular exercise responses in patient populations, and benchmarking physical activity levels for people with disabilities. His recent publications demonstrate a continued focus on innovative rehabilitation approaches using functional electrical stimulation and virtual reality technologies.
His extensive publication record includes over 110 peer-reviewed articles, 19 book chapters, and more than 188 research abstracts. His most recent work (2023-2025) shows a strong emphasis on physical activity patterns among people with spinal cord injury, innovative exercise modalities using electrical stimulation, and behavior change interventions to improve rehabilitation outcomes.
- Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) (2014) - awarded for service to science and community health through developing and promoting spinal cord injury therapies
- Fellow, American College of Sports Medicine (1987)
Professor Davis has secured over $10.9 million in research funding since 2000, including current grants from Australian NHMRC, ARC, and VNI Program. He actively supervises PhD and master's students, both at the University of Sydney and through international collaborations with institutions in Malaysia. His Exercise Physiology and Nutrition research team focuses on translating laboratory findings into practical rehabilitation applications for people with neurological conditions and disabilities.
