Dr Che Fornusek is a Lecturer in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at the University of Sydney. With degrees in Physiology (B.Sc.Hons, University of Canterbury, NZ 1993), Biomedical Engineering (MBioMedE, UNSW 1997), and a Ph.D. in Sydney (2005), his work focuses on applying functional electrical stimulation (FES) technology to improve health outcomes for individuals with neurological injuries/diseases such as spinal cord injury or multiple sclerosis. He holds a patent for FES exercise equipment and serves as secretary of the Australian Physical Disability Rugby League Association.
Research interests include exploring exercise's role in managing comorbidities (obesity, cardiovascular disease) among disabled populations, and optimizing FES applications for paralyzed individuals. Key affiliations include the International Functional Electrical Stimulation Society and Australia New Zealand Spinal Cord Injury Network.
Recent publications (2023-2025) address FES exercise protocols for MS patients, para-sport classification frameworks, and hybrid FES training effects. He has secured grants including the 2022 Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association study on resistance training, and contributed to the BioSpine spinal cord injury technology project.
