Naomi Klein is Co-Director of the Centre for Climate Justice and Associate Professor of Climate Justice in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Arts. Prior to joining UBC, she served as the inaugural Gloria Steinem Endowed Chair in Media, Culture and Feminist Studies at Rutgers University from 2018 to 2021. She is also recognized as an honorary professor of Media and Climate at Rutgers University.
Klein's research focuses on the intersection of crisis and political transformation, examining how large-scale shocks—from economic crises to ecological disasters to terror attacks—act as catalysts for broad-based social change. Her work spans climate justice, focusing on housing, transport, energy, and infrastructure; conspiracy culture, authoritarianism, and ecofascism; reparative green economies; and the social and institutional drivers of ecological crisis. She pays particular attention to the intersections between climate justice and Indigenous land rights, gendered and racialized labor of care, and migrant rights.
Klein's scholarly output reveals a consistent focus on systemic analysis of power structures, with her most recent work exploring the connections between rising authoritarianism, climate crisis, and opportunities for transformative change. Her publications show an evolution from corporate power critique (No Logo) to disaster capitalism analysis (The Shock Doctrine) to climate justice frameworks (This Changes Everything, On Fire, Doppelganger).
