Dr. Nanine Lilla is a Scientific Associate in the Department of Education and Psychology at Freie Universität Berlin, specializing in General Primary School Pedagogy. She is co-head of the subproject at Freie Universität Berlin within the BMBF-funded collaborative project GeLeGanz, focusing on educational success and social participation of disadvantaged students with migration backgrounds in extended education settings. Her academic work is deeply rooted in empirical research on multilingualism, teacher professionalism, and the effects of all-day schooling.
- PhD in Educational Science, Freie Universität Berlin (2017)
- Diplom in Educational Science, Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg (2011)
- Studies in Educational Science with focus on adult education and youth education, at Augsburg, Würzburg, and Umeå, Sweden (2005–2011)
Her research interests center on multilingualism as a resource in schools, teacher professionalism in diverse classrooms, the impact of all-day schooling, and empirical school research. She explores how acculturation processes influence academic performance and well-being among migrant students, using advanced quantitative methods such as latent profile analysis. Her work bridges psychology and education, emphasizing equity and inclusion.
The recent publications highlight a strong focus on acculturation profiles and their relationship with academic outcomes, particularly reading competence and educational aspirations. There is a consistent emphasis on extended education (all-day schooling) as a potential compensatory mechanism for educational disadvantages. The research employs comparative and international perspectives, often analyzing large-scale datasets like NEPS. Key subfields include teacher beliefs, multilingualism, self-concept, and social-emotional development.
