Nancy Levenson serves as Deputy Director of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) and Research Professor at Johns Hopkins University’s Department of Physics and Astronomy. She leads STScI’s operations for NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, Hubble Space Telescope, and Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, while overseeing the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes (MAST). Previously, she was interim director of STScI (2022–2024), deputy director at Gemini Observatory, and tenured faculty at the University of Kentucky.
- Education: PhD in Astronomy (UC Berkeley), MA in Astronomy (UC Berkeley), BA in Physics and Philosophy (University of Oxford), AB in Astronomy and Astrophysics (Harvard University)
Her research focuses on active galactic nuclei obscuration, starburst-AGN connections, infrared galaxies, dust emission, and X-ray astrophysics. She publishes in journals like the Astrophysical Journal and regularly presents at international conferences.

Levenson contributes to STScI’s public engagement efforts and has held leadership roles in the AAAS Astronomy Section. Her career bridges astrophysical research with institutional leadership in observatory operations and data science.
