Professor Ryan Hickox is a Professor of Physics and Astronomy and Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Dartmouth College. He holds a B.S. in Physics from Yale University (2000) and a Ph.D. in Astronomy from Harvard University (2007). His research focuses on observational astrophysics, particularly supermassive black holes, galaxy evolution, and X-ray astronomy. He has been funded by NASA, the NSF (including a CAREER award), and a Sloan Fellowship.
Key research interests include active galactic nuclei (AGN), obscured quasars, and the interplay between black hole growth and star formation. His group uses data from Chandra, XMM-Newton, Hubble, and ground-based telescopes. Recent work includes studies of dark matter halos around quasars, compact starburst galaxies, and accretion disk dynamics in X-ray binaries.
- Education: B.S. Yale University, Ph.D. Harvard University
- Awards: NSF CAREER Award, Sloan Fellowship, Wetterhahn Award
He advises numerous graduate students and postdocs in observational astrophysics, with a focus on AGN demographics, galaxy evolution, and X-ray surveys. His research group operates the Black Holes and Galaxies team at Dartmouth, collaborating internationally on projects like the Lynx X-ray Observatory concept and the Chandra Deep Field South.
